Tombstone

Tombstone, AZ, of course, is the place where the world-famous shoot-out at the OK Corral took place.

After having been a very hot mining town at the end of the 19th century, and then having fallen into steep economic decline, Tombstone has come back as a re-incarnation of its former self.

The result of the "benign neglect" of decades is that Tombstone looks a lot like it did 100 years ago. A trip through town with its stores, theaters, exhibits, etc evokes a strong feeling of what the Old West must have been like.

One of the highpoints is the daily re-enactment of the OK Corral gunfight, where Wyatt Earp, his brothers and "Doc" Holliday confronted the "Cowboys", a local gang.

There is plenty of controversy about who shot first, and whether the Cowboys were even armed. A number of the Cowboys were killed in a few seconds, and Earp group suffered only minor injuries. The feud carried on for years, and a lot more blood was shed by both sides.
