1970's Pictures

John

The picture is my friend John, my first close friend in America. He died of cancer in the 80's.

I met John when I was an exchange student at Browne & Nichols in 1961-62. I ran into him again on the Columbia University campus in 1965, and we became close friends.

John
I ran my first political campaign for John, who was running for Treasurer of the B&N student government in 1962. I designed a campaign theme of fiscal responsibility.

We got 5 votes and were buried in a landslide. Our opponent campaigned on the basis of "more record hops." I learned my first lesson in representative democracy: Listen to what your constituents want, not what you think they ought to have.

Hannelore in Haiti

My friend Hannelore, my first German friend in America. She died in the early 90's.

Hannelore was my predecessor as President of the foreign Students Club at Columbia. I was a student in the college, and Hannelore was getting a Ph.D. in sociology, a torturous process for her.

Hannelore
She always loved Haiti and the Haitians, and when she got her degree she moved there. While living in Haiti, she had a blood clot caught in her spine, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Hannelore led a heroic life. She continued to travel around the world in a wheel chair. She ended up with a high position at the United Nations and created the Year of the Handicapped, which brought world-wide awareness for people with disabilities and changed construction standards in many countries.

Hannelore had the largest entourage of deeply devoted friends of anyone I have ever met. We all loved and admired her; she had a spiritual aura that affected all of us who knew her.

Clowning Around in Washington Square

In this picture I sport long sideburns and bell-bottom pants, the fashion of the day. I am also wearing my first set of cowboy boots, which I loved. Little did I know, that I was destined to fall in love with Montana 20 years later and become a real pseudo cowboy with my own horse...
