Every
town in America has a place like Pop's.Masquerading
as an eating establishment, usually in the form
of the all-American coffee shop, it is really a
community center, where the same people gather at
regular intervals, and where all the essential
local information is exchanged, stories are told,
and much of the social fabric of the town is
woven.
As a newcomer you do not easily understand the
subtle sociology of its culture. It is not until
you come back for the 5th year, when the
"regulars" (the full
members of this secret fraternity) say
"hi" to you for the first time, that
you realize you have just passed Stage One of the
initiation rite.
We love Pop's and go there regularly for
breakfast.
Pop's was on the verge of a major renovation
and expansion when we there in 1998, so we tried
to document the "before" for future
generations.
